RUBIELOS DE MORA
View of Rubielos de Mora |
Our first visit to Rubielos de Mora was quite an adventure. Alberto the veterinary friend had recommended the bar Pichan which we spotted immediately opposite the main gateway to the town.
The bar itself was nothing special but Frederico, the owner, was much in evidence serving his customers at an unhurried pace. However what did attract us, as has been mentioned, were the several huge glass cases at the back of the place which contained the most enormous fossils that I have ever set eyes upon. Some were the size of car wheels and others not much larger than the buttons on your overcoat. There were also prehistoric insects eternally embedded in small chunks of rock. It was fascinating. Each was meticulously labelled and we spent some time absorbing these relics.

Then, after a second welcomed coffee, we left, crossed the road and passed through the castle like gateway of San Antonio.

We then found ourselves in a small square with a centrer fountain gurgling happily away and surrounded by high roofed buildings. To the left was the Town Hall with various flags fluttering in the light breeze.

I have been in many town halls in my lifetime but non so surprisingly quaint and pleasant as this one. A covered patio with columns, plants and steps leading up to what we supposed were the council chambers.

Directly in front of us was a well preserved prison cell and in the corner a glass door which announced by a sign that it was the official tourist office. In we went and were given, by the very pleasant lady in charge, all the information on the town including a sightseeing map that we could easily follow.
The town was a treasure of old buildings many including small palaces and convents

together with the inevitable towering church.
Church |
Here we learned a unique point in that the church being built on what was an old river bed it had two large doors on either side so that if it rained and the water was considerable both doors were opened and the water flowed freely through. Strange but true. There were architectural gems and magnificent statues placed at strategic points. All in all Rubielos de Mora was a place that we would return to on many occasions.
