It was after my visit to the Hostal de la Trucha when I was returning to Cantavieja when I saw a sign to the right that read, Pitarque. As it was only two or three kilometres distance I thought I had better take a look. The short distance reminded me of England in that on both sides of the road were poplar and beech trees in abundance with the background of a very active river nearby.

Arriving at the actual village square I had no problems in parking so having done so I wandered over to what appeared to be the only bar, restaurant and hotel in the place. It didn't take long to engage the lady owner of the establishment in conversation.
Apparently during the summer season Pitarque, being near to several hiking trails, was a very active place with tourists. The main reason for this was that only a short distance away was the source of the river Pitarque which eventually ran into the the river Guadalope.

The river was a most important part of the village life and at the beginning of the last century it was the heart of the paper and textile mill which is now the Hostal de la Trucha.

The population in those early days was over 1.000 inhabitants all happily engaged in agriculture activities and working at the mill. Sadly another victim of depopulation Pitarque has only 79 at the last count.
