ALLEPUZ

Almost a quarter of what it was at the beginning of the last century. Allepuz is a name of Arabic origen which signifies ‘Shell’. The village is perched on the side of a hill near to the river Sollavientos. On my first visit I was travelling from Alcala de la Selva towards Fontanete and Cantavieja. Along this picturesque highway I stopped in a rather dreary looking village for what is known in Spain as an Almuerzo or mid morning break. I cannot remember what I had although it was probably a ham and cheese Bocadillo that is half a crispy bread roll with the two ingredients. However what I do very much remember was that the normal small plate of olives placed on the table were the small black type of olive. And they were absolutely delicious! So much so I ordered a small quantity to take away in a plastic bag for later use. These particular olives are now made into a Pate which is fine for people like me that are interested to try anything.
Once more on my way I eventually connected with the excellent main road that runs from Teruel to Allepuz. On the down hill run to the town I passed the shrine of Loreto (1692),

which conforms to the usual form of this type of religious construction. Finding a place to park I decided that although there was a lot that could interest me here I would, at least, visit the imposing Church of the Purification of Our Lady (1771), with its tower of masonry, brick and multi coloured tiles. In the village there are several monumental houses of the XVII and XVIII centuries, such as Casa Grande or 'large house' with its supports and archways.

After this small excursion I refreshed myself with a beer at one of the several bars near the main road, ordered another Bocadillo to take away. Just outside of the village I found a very pleasant 'Lay By' with views of the pastures down to the river. All in all a pleasant interlude and black olives!
